Shinkafi suspends Yarima’s brother as emir of Bakura

Suspended Emir of Bakura Engr. Mohammed Bello Sani

The Emir of Bakura, Engr Bello Mohammed Sani, has been suspended indefinitely by the Zamfara State government for alleged “misappropriation of emirate’s fund”. The state Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Isiaka Zurmi, said the suspension of the emir was made following a petition against him. Zurmi said a seven-man committee has been set up by the government to investigate the emir, adding that his suspension was to enable the committee to investigate him thoroughly.

“You can’t investigate someone while he is in office and that was why he was suspended,” the commissioner said, adding that the committee will commence work immediately.

He denied that the suspension was politically motivated but did not disclose the amount of money the suspended emir was accused of misappropriating.

Zurmi, however, said that the emir undermined the constituted authority by refusing to attend any government function even when he was invited.

The suspended emir is an elder brother of Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima, the former governor of Zamfara State and ANPP chieftain.

A former Information Commissioner under Yarima, Alhaji Ibrahim Birnin Magaji, who spoke on behalf of Yarima family, said they were not surprised over the issue, saying that Governor Shinkafi chose to reward Yarima in that manner.

He said, “Governor Shinkafi surely means to harm Yarima but has no gut to face him squarely. That is why he has resorted to taking on his relations, associates, supporters and sympathizers. More of this is expected”.

Birnin Magaji said even the board of a state owned Farida Gen. Hospital Gusau now disallows patients and their relations from receiving food to break their fast from Yarima’s residence “for the simple fact that the food was coming from Governor Shinkafi’s arch rival. Why should innocent, sick people suffer from a political fight that they knew nothing about?”

Recent clashes between supporters of the ANPP and those of the PDP in Gusau left three people dead, while many others were injured and scores of vehicles were burnt. A cold war has been brewing between Shinkafi and Yarima since the former parted ways with the latter, who was his boss for eight years
