Profile Of Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Governor of Nasarawa State
Umaru Tanko Al-makura, was born some 57 years ago in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He attended Dunama Primary School, Lafia, Government Teachers College, Keffi, Advanced Teachers College, Uyo, (1972-1975) and the famous Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1975-1978), where he graduated with Bachelor of E
ducation Degree with specialization in Social studies.
U. T. Al-makura was a teacher at the Government College, Makurdi, and later worked as a journalist after his graduation as an Assistance Producer, News and Current Affairs at the then Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN) which later became part of NTA Kaduna.
He has had a long and successful business career. After his graduation in 1978, he formed Al-makura Nigeria Limited, a civil and building engineering company which in addition imported, sold and serviced agricultural and industrial machinery.
This is successful businessman and the entrepreneur was elected into the constituent Assembly in 1988-1989 to represent Lafia-Obi Federal Constituency of the then Plateau State.
Today as a businessman, Al-makura is into real estate and property development as chairman of his company, Ta’al Nigeria Limited.
His political career began from his secondary school days when in his final year he was elected secretary of all major clubs and societies in the school among which are the Literary and Debating Society, Dancing Club and the Muslim Students Society (MSS).
At the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, his alma mater, the young Umaru Tanko Almakura was elected member of the Student Union Parliament, the Student Representative Assembly, et.c
Before then, this adventurous and detribalized Nigerian from Nasarawa State was the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Student Union Government of the College of Education, Uyo. When the position of National Assistant Secretary of the then National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS) the umbrella union of all Nigerian Students in tertiary institutions, was zoned to his school in Uyo, the amiable Umaru Tanko Al-makura was unanimously selected to represent the school at the National Executive Committee of the NUNS.
In 1980, two years after he ventured into politics, Almakura emerged as the Youth Leader of the then National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the then Plateau State, today’s Plateau and Nasarawa State.
As NPN Youth Leader and in line with the party’s constitution, he automatically became a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the defunct NPN in the second republic.
Between 1990-1992, he served as the State as the secretary of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) party in the then Plateau State.
Presently, Alhaji Tanko Almakura is actively occupied with Real Estate Business both in Nigeria and USA where he owns properties in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Washington DC.
He owns the prestigious Ta’al Lake Resort, Abuja, Ta’al Conference Hotel, Lafia (easily the most comprehensive hotel within the North Central Zone with the exception of FCT).
He is presently putting together a state of the art park for recreational activities in Utako – Abuja that will very soon become a center for events, games, relaxation, e-business, car wash among others.
He is married to Hajiya Salamatu T. Al-makura and Mairo T. Almakura. He is blessed with Ten (10) children.
