Zamfara State celebrates 12 years of Islamic Shari’ah

Thousands of Muslim faithful thronged Zamfara State capital, Gusau yesterday to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the implementation of Shari’ah legal system in the state. The two day event, which commenced yesterday includes a dinner for Islamic scholars to be hosted by the state governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.

The preaching session, which took place at the Gusau Eid ground, was attended by renowned Islamic scholars from the Tijjaniyya, Izala and Qadirriyya sects.

Aside from dwelling on requisite characteristics of virtuous leadership, piety, fairness and responsiveness, speakers at the event also harped on the need for Muslims in the country to come together regardless of sect differences to propagate the religion. Senator Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura, who was the first to speak amidst chants of Allahu Akbar, observed that enthroning Shari’ah by his administration in 1999, has engendered social security, reduced poverty and curbed moral decay in the state.

He lamented that for the four years the state was ruled by his predecessor, the system suffered setback through deliberate neglect. Yarima, who said that the present administration inherited a debt profile of N46 billion, said the administration of Yari would have to offset the debt before it can fulfil its campaign promises. He therefore urged people of the state to exercise patience.

“We made promises of providing motorcycles and cars to youths, let me reiterate that God willing, our youths will ride motorcycles and drive different brands of cars very soon. Women will also be supported,” he said.

Among scholars that addressed the crowd, was Sheikh AbdulGaffar Nasiru Kabara, who spoke on behalf of the leader of the Qadiriyya sect, Sheikh Qaribullah Nasiru Kabara. Sheikh AbdulGaffar urged elected leaders to be fair, impartial and upright. Another speaker, Sheikh Abubakar Gero Argungu, who represented the Izala sect, impressed on Governor Yari, the need to draw the attention of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III to the issue of moon sighting in the country.

On his part, Governor Yari told the gathering that he contested for election in order to have an opportunity to promote Islam, adding that now that he has been elected, he would uphold and implement the tenets of Shari’ah and work towards the progress of Islam without compromise.

The governor promised to reconstitute the defunct council of Ulama (Majalisar Malamai) with the objective of giving Muslims in the country a unanimous stand on issues
