Former
Director of Studies National Institute for Policyand Strategic Studies
(NIPSS) Kuru Professor Bashir Ibrahim and member of the Arewa
Consultative Forum Barrister Solomon Dalong at the weekend
challengedthose calling General Muhammadu Buhari a religious bigot to
buttress their allegations with facts.
Professor Ibrahim, who presented a paper titled
‘General Buhari Yesterday, Today in the Nigerian Context,’ organized by
the General Muhammadu Buhari Concern Supporters Forum in Jos, said “the
president of CAN who derives pleasure in castigating Buhari purely on
this religious bigotry should be asked this question since he was old
enough to know what Buhari was when he was Governor of Borno State,
asMinister of Petroleum, Head of State and Chairman of the
PetroleumTrust Fund”.
He described corruption and impunity as the
bane of Nigeria’s retrogression which he said led to the emergence of
insecurity and the evolution of deadly groups such as MASSOB, OPC, MEND
and Boko Haram.
“General Buhari is an epitome of discipline,
patriotism, integrity and transparency. I am not saying he is the only
person that can do the work but I am saying he is the only person that I
know can do it”, he said.
Barrister Solomon Dalong, while
presenting a paper on ‘Religion and Politics in Nigerian Political
Context’, reminded those calling General Buhari a religious bigot to
fear the judgment day where they will be faced with the herculean task
of defending their assumptions.
Dalong argued that religion is
presently the only tool that politicians use to win elections and blamed
the leadership of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former
Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Sani Yarima, for orchestrating the
politics ofreligion in the country.
He then urged General Buhari to
be wary of traitors around him who are trying to tarnish his image,
adding that “those same people are the ones who trampled upon the
chances of CPC in the past
