We commiserate with his family, the good people of Kano and Nigerians on this loss.We present 10 things you should know about this leader.Ado Bayero was born on the 25th of July, 1930, the eleventh child of his father, and second child of his mother.A holder of many honorary doctorate degrees, he was educated up to college level, studying Islam, studied Islam, studied at the School of Arabic Studies and then Zaria Clerical College, where he finished from in 1952.He ascended the throne in October 1963 (aged 33), during Nigeria’s first republic, and is one of the longest-serving emirs in the emirate’s history, marking 50 years of his reign in 2013. He was Nigeria’s ambassador to Senegal at the time.Ado Bayero was once suspended by Muhammadu Buhari because he visited Israel without the permission of the government. At the time the country was not on good terms with Israel and he (the emir) was given a reception fit for a head of state. He once had crisis with former Governor Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi during the Second Republic based on who the most important person in the state was. Sources allege that the Emir was once queried by the then governor on his trips without obtaining permission and it sparked violence in the state because the Emir is regarded as the father of the state. On 19 January 2013, there was an assassination attempt on his life. It failed but two of his sons injured, and his driver and bodyguard dead.Later in the year, at the event marking his 50th year on the throne, the Emir said, “today marks a special day in my life for attaining unique years of 50 on the throne. It is indeed a day of great happiness for me. I want to use this unique opportunity to seek for forgiveness from all and sundry whom I may have offended directly or indirectly. I have forgiven all”Ado Bayero once served as Chancellor for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and until his death, was the Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.May his soul rest in peace.
