An attempt by five lawmakers of Rivers state House of Assembly to impeach the Speaker, Otelemaba Dan Amachree failed but he and many others ended up in hospital for injuries sustained in the fight that ensued. The five members of the House belong to a faction of the ruling PDP which few months ago suspended the Governor Rotimi Amaechi and are now angling to take control of the house allegedly to oust him. They are aligned with the Minister of state for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and thought to be backed by the Presidency which, however, had since denied the allegation. The members belong to the PDP faction under the leadership of Felix Obuah who were not suspended along with other 27 lawmakers announced the impeachment of Dan Amachree and directed Evans Bibi, representing Ogu/Bolo Constituency to take over the seat of the Speaker as early as 9am. Trouble started when Bipi
and Victor Ihunwo, the member representing Port Harcourt constituency III, started attacking other members of the House, believed to be supporters of Governor Amaechi. Over 29 computer sets in the chambers of the House were damaged in the process. The leader of the House Chidi Iloyd representing Emohua constituency and two other lawmakersfrom the Wike’s camp were injured in the fight. All of them were treated in private hospitals in the state capital. Just few hours later, embattled Speaker Amachree, upon his discharge from hospital, returned to the House of Assembly complex at about 11.00 and presided over a plenary, which was attended by 23 lawmakers, where a request brought by the governor was debated
upon. Rivers State Commissioner of Police Mbu Joseph Mbu denied that the Police were helpless when the leader of the Assembly was beaten up. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives yesterday moved to expedite the process of resolving the impasse in Rivers State.
