ACN convention: Akande, Shuaibu emerge chairman, secretary

By the process of affirmation, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday retained Chief Bisi Akande as the national chairman of the party at its national convention in Benin City, Edo State. Senator Lawal Shuaibu was also made the National Secretary following the exit of Dr. Usman Bugaje who is aspiring for the presidency on the platform of the party. Senator Shuaibu joined the ACN in August this year after the AC sealed a deal to work together with the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) group led by former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Bafarawa. He was governorship candidate of the DPP in Zamafara State in 2007.

The convention which took place at the Ogbemudia Stadium also produced Boss Mustapha as Deputy National Chairman, Mr. Kenneth Kobani as National Treasurer while retaining Alhaji Lai Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary. Other officers that emerged are Barrister Muiz Banire, National Legal Adviser, Hajiya Hafsat Muhammad Baba, National Women Leader, Alhaji Abubakar Kari, National Organising Secretary, Chief Regis Uwakwe, National Welfare Officer, Mrs Helen Nbendegar, National Auditor and Ndionyema Uwankwo as National Financial Secretary. None of the national offices was contested for. Shortly after speeches were read, Chairman of the convention committee Dr. Chris Ngige read out the list of candidates already approved at various caucuses before yesterday while the delegates sounded their approval in chorus.

Former national secretary Dr. Bugaje told Daily Trust that the positions were distributed and decided before the convention which only ratified them under the supervision of INEC . The convention was attended by former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and all four governors of the ACN including the host governor Adams Oshiomhole, Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola, Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi and Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola.
