Dankwambo resigns as AGF
The Director of Funds in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) Alhaji Babayo Shehu takes over in acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive AGF.
Daily Trust gathered that Dankwambo, who has obtained a form to run for governor of Gombe State next year, cleared his table on Monday evening and wrote an internal memo to all the directors in the office to submit comprehensive reports of their activities to enable him prepare handing over notes.
In the memo titled; “Withdrawal from service as Accountant General of the Federation” and addressed to all directors in the office, Dankwambo said: “I wish to inform you that I have withdrawn from the service and voluntarily relinquished my appointment as the Accountant-General of the Federation with effect from Monday 20th December, 2010. This has become necessary in order to answer the call of my people at home to participate in the on-going political activities in the country.”
When contacted, the spokesperson of the office, Hassan Dodo, said that on Monday evening, the Minister of State for Finance, Hajia Yabawa Wabi was with the AGF for about 20 minutes but could not say what they discussed behind closed doors.
On why the AGF did not brief the staff before he left, Dodo said it could be due to the fact that most of the directors in the office have gone for interview.
Dankwambo was appointed on April 20th 2005 for a term of four years. The second term was renewed last year.
Already, lobbying has begun for the position of Accountant-General of the Federation as the presidency is now considering a replacement for the outgoing accountant-general.
A source said a Northerner is most likely to be appointed because Dankwambo has not exhausted his tenure, and also because of the recent appointment of a new head of service from the South to replace a retiring southerner.
Among the persons tipped to replace Dankwambo are the director of finance and accounts at the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Idris Gatumbwa Mamman; Mr. Ibrahim Tumsa of the Federal Ministry of Works, and Alhaji Yusuf Agabi.
Mamman is from Borno State, while Agabi is from Nasarawa State.
