VP: No plan to dislodge Jonathan

Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo yesterday denied hatching a plan to scheme out his boss President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential race and to enable him emerge as the “authentic Northern consensus” presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) .

The Sunday Sun newspaper alleged yesterday that Sambo was scheming to contest for the PDP ticket instead of the president. According to it, the plot “manifested in the vice president’s recent trips to the North, in the course of which he repeatedly presented himself as the candidate the North should trust.”

The report quoted a source as saying that “Sambo says he is the authentic northern consensus candidate, not Atiku,” adding that the vice president is vigorously pursuing the northern political leadership for support.

But Sambo in a statement yesterday by his spokesman Umar Sani dismissed the report, saying the Vice President has no intention to stab his boss in the back.

It described the report as a plan by its sponsors to cause disaffection between the two powerful men, adding that the Vice President could not have condescended so low as to embark on a rat race with his boss.

Sani said, “A story captioned “Plot to Replace Jonathan with Sambo Thickens” making the rounds in media circle is not only false in its entirety but the figment of the imagination of the authors.

“The entire story as reported is premised on hearsay and falsehood and smacks of sponsorship. The whole episode is clearly intended to spread mischief and cause planned disaffection in the formidable Goodluck/Sambo camp.

“At no time has Sambo ever contemplated being the vice president of the federation but for President Jonathan who nurtured and ensured its maturity.

“It is therefore preposterous for anyone to even speculate that Sambo will stab President Jonathan in the back going by the synergy they have developed which has always been a source of nightmare to their political opponents.

“Sambo has never minced words in condemning the consensus arrangement by the Adamu Ciroma led Northern Leaders Political Forum (NLPF). He has maintained that he is the political leader of the North going by the precedence already established in governance by his position as the vice president and that no such group should go on a journey of usurpation. He believed conscientiously that such an effort was an exercise in futility. He holds tenaciously and cherishes his fraternal relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan and could not have condescended so low as to embark on a rat race with his boss.

“It should be noted that political battles are better fought on the political as well as electoral turf based on issues and not through outright falsehood sponsored on the pages of newspapers. Our political opponents should be prepared to confront the formidable team of Goodluck/Sambo train which is unstoppable rather than promote and propagate falsehood.
