Prof. Lamido SanusiThe last has not been heard about the jumbo pay of federal legislators as the Speaker of House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, has taken a swipe at the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, (CBN) Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi over his claim that the National Assembly consumes 25 percent of the nation’s budget. At a lecture delivered at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Bankole revealed that about N130 billion was earmarked for the National Assembly in next year’s budget but CBN got about N300 billion. “So, if we take 25 percent, he takes 50 percent, “ the Speaker pointed out. According to Bankole, gone are the days when public officials will just play to the gallery by dishing out spurious figures in order to get 15 minutes of fame. “Nigerians can no longer be fooled, “he added. The Speaker also said that “you can fool some of the people all the time, you can fool all of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all the people all of the time.”The Speaker said that the House has been scrutinising the expenditure of the executive arm of government and the result has been the returning of several billions of unspent money into the treasury. He however said that these silent achievements are not reported in the media because no scandal is involved. In spite of all the noise that arose following the power sector probe, no indicted government official has been questioned, he lamented. ``We have done our job which is to investigate and expose, we cannot prosecute,” Bankole added.According to the Speaker, he has decided to go from one university to another, narrating his experience as the number four citizen of this country in the last three years. “Somebody will ask me 10 years from this time, if this mess continues, that when you were there, what did you do? I will say I talk taya, I save money taya,” he said.Bankole asked the youth to be involved in the nation’s affairs, just like their intervention more than 50 years ago gave the nation independence. He lamented that the nation intends to spend N2 trillion across the local governments in the country, yet most of the youth do not even know their councillors who are involved in the day-to-day activities of the councils.
