Jonathan: PDP may lose 2011 presidency without me

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday warned the 523 automatic delegates from the North-Central zone that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks losing the April 2011 presidential election if they vote for any aspirant other than him in the January 13, party primary election. He said he and Vice President Namadi Sambo possess the qualifications needed by Nigerians at this time for development because, according to him, they symbolize national unity. The president spoke before a large number of delegates and stakeholders of the party in the zone as well as governors of Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau and Kogi States when he visited Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, which is also the North-Central headquarters of his campaign organization. He was there to meet with the delegates and seek their votes in the January 13 presidential primary election.

Addressing the delegates, Jonathan said, “the PDP primary election is like an election before elections. And that is why all the political parties are interested in primaries, because they know that anybody produced by the PDP as a candidate has brighter chances of winning the main election. Except if you produce a candidate that will be rejected by Nigerians. But if you present a candidate that will be accepted by Nigerians, everybody knows that the PDP candidate has brighter chances of winning”, he added.

The president who was accompanied by his campaign Director General, Ambassador Dalhatu Tafida, Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State who is the zonal coordinator, and Senator Walid Jibrin who is the deputy, as well as Senate President David Mark and governors Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa, Jonah Jang of Plateau and Ibrahim Idris of Kogi, appealed to the delegates to give him their votes for him to fly the party’s flag at the general election. All 624 PDP delegates from the North-Central zone endorsed the President Jonathan/Sambo presidential ticket in yesterday’s meeting ahead of the party’s Jan.13 primaries.

Motion for the endorsement was moved by former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana and seconded by former Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Adamu. A voice vote to that effect was called by Senate President David Mark.
